Staff learn how to harness AI

Staff of UOW College Hong Kong were able to get some hands-on practice and insight into how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could make their jobs in tertiary education and administration easier and more efficient as they attended a seminar on AI tools and skills.

Attended by about 20 management and academic staff, the seminar featured a series of insightful presentations and live demonstrations that integrate AI into teaching, research and daily workflows.  It was jointly conducted by Information Technology Manager Mr Tony Lam, Professor KK Sin from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and Vice-President Dr Charlie Choi. 

The seminar opened with Mr Lam’s review of AI development within the tertiary education sector.  Discussion focused on Hong Kong's institutions and examined AI's impact on core areas such as student admissions, teaching, and learning.  Dr Charlie Choi followed with a dynamic session on leveraging Google’s Gemini 3 as a teaching partner as he established a live connection to demonstrate its multimodal capabilities.  Professor KK Sin shared practical frontline experiences using AI to enhance pedagogy, where he demonstrated the application of ChatGPT in marking student assignments, allowing a glimpse into automated assessment support.  Other tools such as NotebookLM were also shown to the seminar participants. 

Participants enquired about specific use cases and the practical constraints of implementing these AI tools.  The seminar provided a comprehensive overview of the current AI landscape, offering tangible examples of how these evolving technologies can be harnessed to enrich educational delivery, boost research productivity, and streamline administrative tasks within the university environment.
