About Instituto Cervantes

Instituto Cervantes is a global institution dedicated to promoting the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. It offers Spanish language courses, including specialized and self-access learning resources, and trains over 18,000 Spanish teachers annually. The Spanish Virtual Classroom (AVE) provides interactive learning for more than 90,000 students each year. The centers also host cultural activities, such as exhibitions, concerts, and conferences, and manage a library network with over 1.2 million volumes. Additionally, the Instituto administers language certification programs like the DELE exams and the SIELE assessment service, as well as the CCSE test required for Spanish citizenship. It also supports Hispanic studies worldwide through its Hispanismo portal and accredits Spanish language teaching centers globally.

LEVELS

Structured Spanish learning program

Our program follows 6 comprehensive proficiency levels, aligned with the tiers of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2) - as specifically adapted for Spanish in the Cervantes Institute Curriculum.

Program Structure:

  • Each level is divided into 30 or 60-hour modules
  • Immersive learning: Students communicate in Spanish from day one, starting with simple content (A1.1) through advanced mastery (C2.5)
  • Seamless progression: Carefully designed advancement through all competency stages

Level A1 – Beginner (120 hours)

To enter Level A1.1, no previous knowledge of Spanish is required.

At the end of this level, students will be able to understand and use very common everyday expressions and simple phrases to meet basic needs. They can introduce themselves and others, and ask for or give basic personal information (e.g. address, belongings, friends). They can interact in a simple way, provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. Classes at this level are conducted in Spanish, with minimal use of English.

Level A2 – Advanced Beginner (120 hours)

To enter Level A2, students must either be returning learners or take a placement test.

By the end of this level, students can understand frequently used phrases and expressions related to areas of relevance (personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). They can manage simple, routine communication that involves straightforward exchanges of information. They can describe past events and aspects of their environment in basic terms.

Level B1 – Intermediate (180 hours)

To enter Level B1, students must either be returning learners or take a placement test.

By the end of this level, students can understand the main points of clear texts on familiar topics related to work, study, or leisure. They are able to manage most situations that may arise while traveling in areas where Spanish is spoken. They can write simple, connected texts on familiar topics and describe experiences, events, wishes, and aspirations, giving reasons or explanations for opinions and plans.

Level B2 – Upper Intermediate (180 hours)
To enter Level B2, students must either be returning learners or take a placement test.

At the end of this level, students can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions within their field of expertise. They can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that enables natural conversation with native speakers. They can write clear, detailed texts on various subjects and explain viewpoints on topical issues, giving the pros and cons of different options.

Level C1 – Advanced (240 hours)
To enter Level C1, students must either be returning learners or take a placement test.

At this level, students can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. They can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. They can use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes. They can produce clear, well-structured, detailed texts on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices.

Level C2 – Proficiency (240 hours)
To enter Level C2, students must either be returning learners or take a placement test.

By the end of this level, students will have no difficulty understanding virtually any kind of spoken or written Spanish. They can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely, even when discussing complex topics. They are comfortable using idiomatic expressions and colloquial language. They can write clear, fluent texts in an appropriate style and read almost all types of written material with ease.
