Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF)

Welcome to our TCF website!

The Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF) is a language placement test for non-native speakers of French. Our French Section, Faculty of Arts and Humanities is organising the TCF once again for everyone interested in French and would like to take a French language test in Hong Kong. If you would like to test your proficiency level in the French language, it is definitely an opportunity for you! Please feel free to let your friends and colleagues know about this opportunity.

Recognition of TCF

The TCF is administered by the Centre International d'Etudes Pédagogiques (CIEP) for the French Ministry of Education. French Higher Education authority, university authorities, university language centres in France and abroad, different educational institutions responsible for French language teaching and learning may also recognise the TCF. You may find out more information of the TCF on the CIEP official website.

The grading scale used to evaluate the language proficiency of candidate is translated into 11 languages so as to help educational institutions and employers understand the TCF and offer a benchmark of the abilities of the certificate holders.

Reasons for taking TCF

  • Personal: An evaluation of your comprehensive skills in French language is provided - Compulsory examinations - listening, grammatical structures, reading; Optional examinations - writing, speaking. It also provides a snapshot of your proficiency level in French language at the time you take the test.
  • Academic: The accreditation of TCF is designed for candidates according to international standards. The TCF is recognised by higher educational institutions, universities, authorities, as meeting French language requirements for entry.
  • Professional: The certificate of TCF is a benchmark of French language abilities of candidates. It could be used to endorse job applications or applications for any professional promotion.

Content and Structure of TCF

The compulsory part of TCF is divided into three multiple-choice tests:

  • Listening (25 mins)
  • Grammatical Structures (15 - 20 mins)
  • Reading (45 mins)

certificate regarding the result of TCF will be offered to candidates. The TCF result ranges from level A1 to level C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Preparation for taking TCF

You may listen to audio recordings, read and do language exercises, watch audio-visual documents and French TV, practice on the internet. In particular, you may complete on-line training sessions on the TCF page, TV5 website
