Staff at UOW College Hong Kong picked up useful knowledge and application techniques on artificial intelligence as they took part in an “Enhancing Student Learning through AI & Engagement Strategies” workshop on 20 June 2025.
Dr. Cheung Siu Kau, Consultant on Special Projects for the College, led the first session on designing AI-enhanced classroom exercises, moving beyond traditional lecture methods. Dr. Cheung demonstrated how generative AI could help educators create activities that improve knowledge retention while maintaining academic standards. Participants discussed applications of these techniques across different subject areas, showing particular interest in how system theory could inform their teaching practices.
Dr. Hitoshi Murakami, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, then shared effective strategies for Japanese language instruction. He emphasized the importance of student self-preparation balanced with smart AI integration, while also highlighting cultural immersion techniques. Attendees noted how these approaches could be adapted for teaching other languages, sparking useful conversations about cross-disciplinary applications.
The concluding part of the workshop was led by Mr Victor King, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, who gave a thought-provoking exploration of responsible AI use in education. Through practical case studies, he illustrated how AI could enhance information search without replacing critical thinking. This session generated lively debate about maintaining learner autonomy while effectively leveraging technological tools.
More than 20 participants benefitted from the workshop, and feedback was very positive, confirming the workshop's practical focus and relevant content. The concrete examples of AI integration and the opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues from different disciplines were well received.
