On 8 November 2025, students from across the Faculty of Science and Technology came together for a guided educational tour at Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve, one of Hong Kong’s most treasured ecological sites. Led by an experienced interpreter and assistant, the group embarked on a 3-hour journey through lush woodlands, uncovering the secrets of biodiversity, conservation, and ecological history.
This wasn’t just a walk in the woods—it was a deep dive into:
- The history and ecological setting of Tai Po Kau
- Woodland classification and how local forests compare to tropical rainforests
- The structure and function of primary rainforests vs. Hong Kong’s secondary woodlands
- Threats to tropical ecosystems and global conservation efforts
- The importance of biodiversity in sustaining life and innovation across disciplines
Students from Environment and Sustainable Development explored real-world applications of sustainability. Aviation students reflected on how environmental factors influence flight operations and planning. Creative Media participants captured the beauty and complexity of nature through visual storytelling. Meanwhile, Information Systems Development students considered how data and tech can support conservation efforts.
